SCP started out 'mining' the not-for-profit sector for deals because it is in this space that this model has its early roots. Because performance management and measurement have been and continue to be key values in our practice, all of our portfolio organizations work with us to monitor and report on the social and financial returns generated through this hybrid model. We believe that the Social Return on Investment (SROI) framework makes sense as it takes into consideration both the financial and social mission outcomes of the enterprise. In other words, we recognize that our 'blended value' business requires a blended value evaluation tool to measure success.
We see our SROI report cards as a litmus test for these early investments - how well are we achieving our mission? - and as a tool for strategic management of social enterprises. We use the first page of the report template as a tool in our social due diligence process with a potential investee. It is simple - on one page, list your goals, methods to reach those goals and what success metrics will be used to understand progress made in reaching these goals.
In finding the balance between the two missions, we believe that a SROI framework and reporting system generates a composite number for both bottom lines in an appropriate way to judge performance. Because SCP does the bulk of the work in generating these reports it gives us the opportunity to really roll up our sleeves and understand the trade-offs that come with launching and growing purpose built social enterprise. In fact, it was through this learning and doing our portfolio SROI reports that we helped us to think through a new investment approach and ultimately establish a franchise program.

ICR was launched in 2002. A local community investment organization - Community Ownership Solutions (COS) - built the concept and entered and won SCP's social enterprise business plan competition that same year. This marked the beginning of our investment partnership with COS and opportunity to work with one of Canada's great purpose built social enterprises.
As a bookend to this ICR early learnings report and how the SROI framework and reporting process ultimately helped steer our strategic direction, we are currently working on a more detailed SROI learnings report to capture what we have learned from working with ICR and other social enterprises across the country.
